Default P0410 & p0455 cel

Hello everyone,

The CEL light came on my 1998 C70. The error codes are: P0410 and P0455.

My first question is: does it affect the car in any way? I intend on fixing it slowly over the next month or so. I will be taking it on a 200 miles trip over the weekend. Will having these codes the affect the car in any way? Is it safe to drive it over the distance? I have read of some people saying that this does not affect their car's performance.

Second: For the P0410 code - air pump is expensive! Are there cheaper options out of this? Is there any place where I can get step by step instructions since I intend on DIYing this myself.

Third: The P0455 says a big leak. Where all can I look to find possible leaks?

Fourth: Are these two codes linked? If so, which one should I try to tackle first? Is there any way to test the air pump before just changing it?

I am new to this car and havent played around with it like my 240.

Help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks heaps.

Air pump is very common and usually needs to be replaced. It's located under the battery try. There is a big conenctor with two wires, blue and black if I remember correctly. Disconnect it and jump power to the blue wire going to the pump and ground the black wire. If it doesn't run, or runs poorly, it's bad. Also, replace the check valve on the exhaust manifold at the same time.

I didn't run the codes to translate them to Volvo specific codes, but if the other is for fuel tank leakage, it won't effect the car but you will fail emissions if you have emissions testing in your area. Check the gas cap seal and the hoses at the charcoal canister, located either behind the driver's front fender or under the car near the fuel filter (rear passenger side), depending on emissions code.

Dont have emissions in my area thankfully! My biggest concern is - can I replace it after I take it for the drive? As in, lets say I drive the car for a large number of miles over the next few days. Will it affect the engine in any way?? Do I risk damaging any other component? I heard that it might hurt fuel economy a bit? I also read that it can make the engine run poorly and also might start making horrible screeching sounds (from Mazda MX-7 forums)?

Any ideas on the replacing the air pump after driving all those miles? Or is it something that needs to addressed ASAP?

Thanks.

Sorry, missed that part of the question.

You won't damage anything with either of these problems. The air pump is just to warm up the cat faster on cold starts. In most cases, they fill with water and seize, so then they won't make any noise.
