Default check engine light mystery

Hi all,
I own a '95 850 T-5R sedan (yellow). Last week my check engine light came on (not flashing). I brought it to the shop, they replaced the spark plugs and air filter. The light came on again. The car feelsshaky going up hills and lacking in power. The shop diagnosed another misfire on cylinder 3 but couldn't find anything wrong, rotated and balanced the wheels and the light went off on its own. I'm no expert with cars but I know this has nothing to do with the wheels. Does anyone know what it could be? Any information you guys have would be helpful. Thank you! - Lara

Hello MellowYellow[sm=welcomesign.gif],

Are you saying that the check engine light is now out and has stayed out since you rotated the tires?

Does your car have one of these, it is a diagnostic port so that you can pull/check codes that your car may have.

If you do, and I am pretty sure that you do, check in the main 850 page or do a search for codes ehre and you will fnd everything that you need to take car of the small and medium stuff.

There is a OBDII port inside the car, it is infront of the gear selector.

It looks like a coin holder, it says OBDII on it, remove the coins and it pops out.

I will bet the cap, rotor, and wires are original or close to it and are bad.
BTW nice to see another Yellow owner!!! That makes4 on here. EDIT forgot about the 1 wagon owner.

Hi, Thanks for your help! The shop ran diagnostictests both times and got misfire codeson 2 different cylinders, but the second time didn't see anything bad.No shakingon the way home from the shop yesterdayor this morning. I wonder if when they replaced the spark plugs last week one wasn't torked correctly? I'm just trying to come up with some suggestions for if this happens again because my mechanic didn't want to keep guessing at my expense. Who are the other yellow owners on here? There aren'tmany of us! Thanks again, have a great day! -Lara

I got one.

I would definitely do spark plug wires, dist cap and rotor. Pretty easy to do yourself too.

hmm,I thinkI'll leave it to the pros.Definitely not a DIYer when it comes to cars but I'll pass along what you both suggested, thanks! Just out of hypothetical curiosity, if a yellow sedan were to come on the market, what would you consider an appropriate asking price? I see what KBB suggets but I don't know if they take into consideration the rarity and value of the car. 142,000 miles and in near-perfect condition (well, except for the minor situation below). Just wondering...

If the wires are still OEM they will have the date stamped on the wires. In either white or yellow you will see 4 numbers total. 2 are the week and the other 2 are the year they were made.

Not sure exactly of the value I paid 4k for mine with 90K on it.

ok, that's great to know, I'll check it tonight. Thanks for your help everyone!

Wow, you got a deal! Unless it needed work. I had to replace the front spoiler on mine in '99 (don't know what the previous owner did to it...) but other than that it was totally clean. The only other one I've seen in Vermont is a yellow wagon. It's trashed. Breaks my heart. Thanks again! -Lara

That happened to me yesterday,I wrote my original question 3 times. If it's longer than about 6 lines it won't go through. [:@]

It's been going on now for months. I estimate there was only about 25 yellow wagons imported to the US. I would ****** one up in a minute if I found one. I'm looking at a red 97 850 R wagon right now.

I always loved the Yellow as it was the first one that I ever saw and then I saw a Red 850 T5R and I have been hooked ever since.

Wasn't a T5R if it was Red. T5R's were only made in 95 and come only in yellow and black. Most people refer to the 96 and 97 R's as T5R's though. I'm talking strictly in the US though.
