Consensus on turning rear rotors?
Well, I have my engine back in and drove to work today and all is well other than an annoying vibe in the rear when I applied the brakes. Not sure the condition of the rotors (other than warped) but was wondering what people think about turning the rears? I know turning the fronts is frowned upon but what about the rear? This thing has been laid up for 8 months and I don't remember then being warped when I started the engine pull project but they may have been. Or could having the e brake on for 8 months do that? I would not think so but who knows.
Would you turn them if there is enough meat on them or buy new ones? This is a N/A so no heavy duty driving/racing.
Thanks,

RE: Consensus on turning rear rotors?
hey guys, dealers never recommend turning rotors because it is money they dont pocket. any reputable shop will check the thickness and recommend whether it is ok to turn or not. Since they are working on a brake component, they will definitely tell you if turning them is not recommended due to liability issues.dont believe the corporate hype.

I have heard that leaving the E brake on tightly for an extended period of time can put a slight warp in rotors, but I have never experienced it myself. You can turnthe rotors, but as tech says, turned rotors tend to warp easier. Torquinglug nuts unevenly when changing a tire can warp rotors also.

RE: Consensus on turning rear rotors?
I think I had a combination of e-brake on for a long time and previous owner letting someone over torque the lug nuts. I had my impact gun rated at 250 ft/lbs and it was having trouble breaking them loose.A few took quite a few hits to even get them started. With that said, I took them to have them miked and they had about 25/1000th left. One would have been fine turned but the other was way warped and iffy. I told him to toss them and purchased new ones.
I have heard that turning takes some "meat" off and thus there is less to disipate heat so they tend to warp easier. It is a fine line as it seems that so little is taken off to turn them but it seems to make a difference, especially on Volvos. There are such good deals on Groton and Ebay that it really is probably better to buy new if possible. I hope to have it back on the ground and ready to run tomorrow afternoon.
