Default Cooling system flush - can't re-install heater hose

I'm repairing a 1996 850 for a friend of mine and I'm having a problem re-installing the heater hose into the coupler on the fire wall after a cooling system flush. The bottom hose went back into the coupler with no problem but I am unable to get the top hose to lock into place. I did not replace any of the washers or the plastic locking ring since they were still in good shape. I've done this procedure in the past to three other Volvo's that I own so I'm rather confused as to why the plastic snap on the metal hose will not snap into into the coupler. I did notice that when I removed some of the rubber washers I was able to get the hose to lock in place. I just can't get hose to lock into place with all the rubber and plastic o-rings.

I finally got it to work. Vise grips and some really hard pushing did the trick. Now I'm thinking I may have cracked the housing by pushing on it so hard. I did have this issue with my XC70 and S70.

If it is hard to connect, it is likely damaged. I would source a new firewall coupling. It's not worth the risk. Also, I believe the hoses are different sizes, mixing them up will cause issues.

:? Why are people disconnecting those lines other than to install new hoses or a new coupling?
