Angry Dash Lights & power Steering

Hi

I'm new.

I have a Volvo 850 saloon.
First registered 1993, 110,000 miles.
I parked it for 5 minutes in my driveway this morning.
When I returned, it started ok
However, virtually all of the dashboard warning lights stayed on.
Also, the power steering seems to have failed completely so that the vehicle is virtually impossible to drive.

Any suggestions?

First of all, welcome!

I would say your drive belt has broken or dislodged. That would stop the alternator charging, which makes all your lights come on, and makes the power steering pump stop working.

Have a look on the left side of the engine, there should be a long belt visible that loops around the power steering pump, a/c compressor and alternator as well as the engine pulleys

Hi and welcome.

If the serpentine belt broke you will need a special tool to get it back on. Some people go to a hardware store and get a 3/4" gas line plug and use a pipe wrench to turn it.

After you get that sorted out, you might want to watch a few video's and read a few sticky's to get up to speed real quick on how to care for your new found 850.

Default Drive Belt

H1 Brick

Thanks for responding.
How do you explain the fact that the engine starts and the cars moves forwards and backwards [enough for me to park in the garage]?

The last time the drive belt broke, it screwed up all the valves and I certainly was not able to restart the engine.

Default Drive Belt

Hi Brick [again]

I guess I'm confusing the drive belt and timing belt.
I have checked the car and there is a broken belt [ca 3 cm across and ribbed]
Thanks again for your prompt and knowledgable response.

Best wishes

Serpentine belt. Out of cover.

Timing belt. Under cover.

Yes , a Volvo certainly will.

Always a good idea to check out advise before dismissing it
