Default diagnostic and OBD-2

So I have a '95 turbo and both diagnostic systems. My question is are both as good as each other? I pulled a couple fuel codes from the engine bay, I don't have the scan tool, but it doesn't seem to work in the 6th socket. I haven't tried the others.
Side note, one codes was a front knock sensor, the manual says I need to remove the intake manifold, is this true?

You might be able to get to them without removing the intake.

The only difference between the OBDI and OBDII is if you had a decent scanner you can monitor different things with it.
