Default Did I run out of gas???

Today I was sitting in front of a friends house chatting and my car shook for a second and died. I got it restarted and drove straight to the gas station and found 3 codes on the CEL.

I have been running Lucas in it the past few days to clean out injectors, etc. and was getting a little low on gas. The trip computer said I had 70 miles to empty. I had no fuel low light when I stopped in front of my friends house, but I was joking with him that I was going to run the car out of gas and about 2 minutes later it shut off. I was idleing in front of his house with the car on about a 5 or 10% tilt to the drivers side. When I gased up I was able to put 15.8 gallons in it. From what I know, the 850 holds 19.5 in the tank, not all usable.

Would the car have run out of gas with 3 gallons still in the tank? The 3 codes were... 0172, A multiple missfire, and I think a 0330. Something like that. After I gased up I cleared the codes and drove about 3 miles home so I have not had anything else happen.

So I'm wondering if a slight tilt like that would cause me to run out of gas??? I checked at the stealership about 2 weeks ago and they claim the car has had all recalls done.

I doubt it ran out of gas. But maybe something else made it stall.

Yikes. I guess I'll have to wait till it happens again and pay attention to the codes. I once had a 740 GLE that ran out of gas with 1/4 tank left. The fuel sending unit was bent and not picking up gas from the bottom of the tank.

This is bitter sweet. I was hoping this was not out of gas with that much in the tank but I'm not sure if the sending unit is in the middle of the tank or on the right side. If it's on the right side of the tank it may have run out. I was just sitting on the tilt for about 4 minutes.

The pump is on the passengers side the sending unit it closer to the middle of the tank.

So, if the tank was 10 feet wide and the sending unit is at the 5 feet mark where would that put the pump?

It would be at about 3 feet from the passenger side edge.

Ok, so I should not have run out of gas. That was really strange. Hopefully it will never happen again.
