In my 97 850 the **** to switch between defrost and other blower positions won't turn easily. It will turn but I have to use pliers and put some effort into it. Anyone know anything about this?

 

Sounds like your unit is going out. I would get one from a junk yard and replace it. You can pull the radio out, reach behind it and push it out. Be careful it will cut you when it falls on your arm. (Don't have to disconnect the radio, just pull it out).

 

Time for a replacement before you snap the shaft.

 

I just seen a write-up over on Matt's site that someone took one apart, lubed a few parts and it worked for them. Go over there and look in the Forum / 850 section.
