Default early vs late keyless remotes

Are the keyless remotes definitely year specific? Can a 94 remote be programmed to operate on a 97? I have only one remote for my 97 wagon, but I have a good remote from a 94. Before I buy another on ebay I want to clarify that I need to get another late model remote with the buttons above each other and a panic fucntion. Thanks

Try to program it to your car and see if it works. Turn your ignition on five times and after the fifth time leave the ignition in the run posiiton. Push one of the button on the remote and it should now be programmed. If you have two remotes do them both at the same time. After pushing the button on one remote push the other one too. I think it will de-program your other remote if you do just one, but I'm not sure of this.
