Does you car have one and they need it fixed if something is wrong with it or they want you to install a new one from scratch. For second case - I would not install anything that didnt came with the car from factory. The visual smog can vary depending on weather conditions and i have never seen anyone failing a car for that part. Do a second check at some other place.
yeah they want me to equip it with an egr. from scratch i guess.
is buying an egr and trying to install it not a good idea?
i can see that the egr location is blocked off and there is a sensor there. one of the manifold vacuum hoses is blocked off. i assume thats for the egr.
thanks

Find a better smog shop.
If your car didnt have EGR from the factory, and you did add one, then I believe you would need to swap the ECU which has the EGR function.
Unless they just want to see it, and it doesnt have to be functional.
