Default EGR Valve

In my quest for perfection on my 850 I've been stumped by a vacuum hose that goes no where and is plugged at the end with a small bolt. I never knew what this was for, but I've FINALLY figured out that it's the hose that attaches the EGR valve to the controller. HA! Took 3 years, but I figure it out Now, I realize that it was disconnected for a reason, maybe the previous owner didn't want to fix the EGR system and band-aided it up, who knows. My question is, if I cleaned the EGR up (I have to replace the PCV anyway), verified that the valve was working and put it together, will it help anything? In other words, is it reall worth the time and effort to get the system back in order or not?

Ok, another question; does the EGR effect performance or gas milage at all or just emmissions?

It can impact the performance. Usually it just takes some carb cleaner to clean up the valve itself. The hole in the intake manifold where the EGR valve bolts on is usually the biggest source of trouble as it gets completely clogged. If you are taking off the intake for the PCV job anyway it is a perfect time to fix it. Be sure to get a new EGR gasket and a throttle body gasket along with your PCV stuff.

Before I dive into it, is there a way to test the solenoid and valve too see IF they work so I'm not doing all this work to just add more time and cost to the project?? There aren't any codes that are being thrown and the CEL is dark.

If it isn't throwing codes then just clean and go. If there was something wrong then it would throw a code.
