Default Emission Control system leak

'97 850 GLT -

Engine light is on. No effect on the cars operation that is noticeable.
I ran the codes and got "PO442 - Emission Control System Leak detected
(small leak)"

I am not at this point totally familiar with the system but I looked for bad
vacumn hoses, connectionsetc and found nothing that would be obvious.
Hasanyone had this problem and/or have any suggestions on where to start
tracking it down? Since the car is still running fine, is it something that can
wait until we do the total PCV clean up later on?

Any help is appreciated. thanks!

That is a different system then the vent box system.

The best bet would be to have it smoke tested or make a tool like I did and add pressure to the system.
I posted pics and made a post a pinned topic."Home made special tool"

If yo decide to do that let me know so I can give you more info on doing it.

Default RE: Emission Control system leak

Hello:

Thanks for the quick reply. I am to new to the Volvo systems
to get much from it however. I am planing on giving this car
to a boy I am raising for his birthday next summer. So I am trying
to teach him all I can about it as i go. He doesn't know it is going
to be his but I am buying all the books and code readers that
apply so he can work on it.

Before we get too mechanical or technicalon this: have you ever heard
of anyone having this happen after running "regular gas?"On my way
back from Los Angeles to MT, I ran into a very busy gas stop and after
using my card, the premiumwas not working so I filled with regualr. I am
not sure it was such bad gas because the car still ran smooth. But, could
the sensors have been affected some way? If so and I cance the light, it
should stay off right?

Guessing and hoping for a cheap fix. He, he!

NO that will have no affect on those codes.
For the tool I made it is a regulator and a guage and a couple of airline fittings.
If you have access to a compressor then you can search for the leak.

You might also have a bad evap valve on the cooling fan. Worse case is the fuel pump housing is cracked causing the leak.
