Default Engine tick. Scary!

Hey guys. 97 850 T5 here. I developed a slight tick in my engine last night. Its been pretty cold lately. like....1 degree. The car was all the way warmed up. I mean, I've been driving around town for a good hour and a half at this point. Got some gas and the car was silent. Everything was dandy. then on my way home a supercharged Cobalt SS starts to mess with me. So I went for it lol. about 1/3rd into 2nd gear the car cut out really bad, so I backed off the throttle a hair to make it stop, and got back on it. We were about dead even 25-80. When I got home I noticed a ticking sound. Almost like a ticking lifter. Doing the screw driver test it is NOT bottom end...thank the flying spaghetti monster for that one. But I can't pinpoint it. When I take the oil filler off it doesn't get any louder. I mention that because my 98 V70 T5m ticks top end, but it gets louder with the cap off, so I'm thinking it's deeper than lifters maybe? Also, weather the car the warm or cold, the tick is present.

My car has SOLID lifters. It's a pretty slow tick compared to that of the lifters in the V70. So if it is a lifter by chance, its just one (i hope that gives a better description of the sound). Usually I'm pretty good with finding this stuff, but I'm stumped.

What kind of oil and filter are you using?

My T-5R is stock and I got spanked by a Colbolt once. It was really bad. Someone told me that the Colbolt was modded but it was still a crying shame. I actually thought my foot slipped off the gas pedal. I don't know what those cars can do top end but from 25 - 80 it blew my door off.

I know, this may seem very obvious, but...did you check your oil level?

Low oil can possibly cause a slight tick from the lifters. My 850 ticks slightly if the oil gets a bit too low.

Like I said, this is simple stuff, but sometimes that's all that's wrong. You gotta start from somewhere.

BTW, a good video would be very helpful.

Good luck!

if its do-able, you can always count how many times it ticks per minute, if its half of your RPM you know its at the camshaft, if it isnt its likely to be around the crankshaft, but still could be cam if there are 2 opposite valves malfunctioning.

Yes, solid lifters from a s70 T5 head lol. Oil is good. I use 10W 40, and yes I let it warm to temp before I even drive it lol. I have had spun bearings in the past, I know what they sound like. It is not a spun bearing lol. I actually have had a rod break. In my 98 S70 T5. Which is where I got the solid lifters, 16T, and white injectors. It blew 2 holes in the block, cracked the piston into 4 pieces, and slammed the piston pieces into the head...lolol. It is not a broken rod. Its actually pretty quiet compared to many other ticks ive had.

As far as Cobalts go, this one was the supercharged model. I don't even mess with the newer turbo ones. Supercharged cobalt: 200hp, turbo: 260hp. And there a few hundred pounds lighter. So I would imagine if you got beat as hard as you make it sound, it was either a decently modded supercharged, or possibly an MBC turbo one. I can hold pretty close to some 20PSI 1.8t GTI's. from about 30-80 They have about 1.5-2 cars on me. Untill I get my DP and tune.....;]

Ill go get a video here in a little while as well as count the ticks. Thanks for all the input guys! Of all the cars I've owned, and forums for them that I've been on, this has to be one of the most helpful layed back places I've ever been a part of.
