Default Error P0500 help...

Cant find out what the problem could be.
After pulling my dash out to replace some lights and find out why the trip meter was not working my service engine soon light came on. I took the car (whichI bought about a month ago with very little problems) to autozone to give me an analysis on what couldbe going on. They checked the car through the OBD-II analysis and said that the error code P0500 poped up.

Now after looking online I have seen that this problem is associated with the speedo not working (which mine is working correctly), and that the ABS light ison (mine does not). Now am i just paranoid that something is wrong with the car? Upuntil then it worked perfectly fine besidesthe valves needing a little adjustment.
Everything on the instrument pannel was and still is working fine. This was not the 1st time i've tinkered with the dash, but do you think me messing with that and pulling it apart to get to the trip meter could be what the problem is? I dont notice any difference from when I bought it up until now.

BTW its a 95 non-turbo sedan

Pull the codes your self from the engine,ABS, and transmission and then clear them and see what happens.
Here is how to pull the codes.

Ok, I checked the codes
ABS Codes
314 Right/Real wheel sensor open or shorted
213 No Left/Rear wheel signal on moving off
214 No Right/Rear wheel signal on moving off
141 Pedal signal faulty shorted to ground
142 Stop lamp switch faulty

Transmission Codes
232 Speedometer signal missing

All other codes were ok.
Tried restarting, but still got the same codes
Any idea's?
I just got the car as a present to get to and from college. Trying to save some money by doing repairs on the car by myself.[/align]

The ABS on these cars are noted to fail. The 95 & earlier model have different problem compared to newer models. It is usually the brake switch and something else that I cannot recall that render the ABS useless. However, the ABS module does seem to fail on 95 & earlier once a while. Considering the same codes returning, I believe it is the module that went south.

No one seems to deal with 95 or earlier ABS module, and if that is the culprit you would have to open the module and attempt to fix it yourself:

https://volvoforums.com/m_58856/tm.htm

Yours may be different; metal casing type.

The ABS module is also responsible for sending vehicle speed signal to the speedometer. I do not believe your fixing the instrument panelstarted the problems, but I could be wrong.

I would try disconnecting the vehicle speed sensor on the tranny and clean the electrical connector with a can of electrical contact cleaner to see if it cures the trouble. See attached for the location. If it requires you to jack up the car, let a shop do it for you unless you know how to jack up a car safely. Also, before you dig into the sensor, see what others have to say; they may have simpler cures.

If the car is running fine, I would not worry about it because on many European cars, check engine light comes on for some trivial reasons.

Did the car come with a full service record? If not, I would give the car a full tune-up. Refer to my 1st & 2nd reply at: https://volvoforums.com/m_48928/tm.htm

NEVER underestimate the replacement intervals for the timing belt (70,000 miles/5 years).

I hope this gets you started. When in doubt, go with Tech’s suggestions.

Maybe the ABS module is bad.
