Are there any options to make one work with an aftermarket stereo?

in my quick research it looks like you have to rig an fm modulator to make a factory changer work (Multi-Disc Changers Installation)

But in the meantime my alternator decided to take a dump so the new stereo is on hold.

My 6 CD cassette unit has failed; OEM from 1995. Are there any aftermarket units that will hook up to the control cable? Or do I have to cruise junk yards?
