Question failed odometer in my 1996 850 turbo

imagine setting my trip odometer other day when I pressed down the pin to set it while my vehicle was still in motion, little did I know THIS WAS A NO NO upon learning my trip meter showed it wasn't functioning by gauge on dash, and shortly there after my car odometer also failed to be working , so I am in complete daze, why ? if trip odometer fails, DOES IT ALSO TRIGGER THE CAR ODOMETER TO FAIL? please tell me if I need a complete kit put in my dash? because guessing as to how far one has driven their Volvo is driving me crazy to say the least, love the car but this is a huge pain in the ****, much like not being able to open ones hood period. would appreciate some feedback from any of you long time Volvo owners , thank you

Check the DIY - Hot Topics thread. It's a common problem. Easy fix. Do you have the trip computer in the car?

The same cog drives both the trip meter and the odometer, by pressing the reset button while driving you run the risk of shattering the cog, a bit fiddly to fix but reasonably straight forward. The replacement cogs are stronger than the original so you should only have to do this once.

Thumbs up

thank you for those replies back, now I know what I am up against with my Volvo , sounds like a uncomplicated task at hand when all I have to do is replace the broken 'cog' , does this require me to buy the entire assembly or could I get my hands on a single cog? appreciate the advice, upon hearing from my nephew who's a Volvo mechanic ,I suggested to him about getting a new "cog'" well he replied getting a whole new kit assembly costing in the $130 range would be better...

You just need the one gear. For the trouble of taking it all apart I'd just replace both. That and do the instrument bulbs too. The fewer times you take the dash off the fewer things you have a chance to break !!

This should explain it.
