Default TURBO UPGRADE on Volvo 850 TURBO, 1996

I am thinking of replacing my stock (15G) turbo with 16T. The stock turbo is a straight flange.

Is it better is to replace an angled flanged 16T combined with a angled 3 " down-pipe?

I read somewhere angled flanged turbos have better gas flows than the straight flange.

Also, is a ECU flash required for upgrade to 16T?

Thank you

you're gonna have to switch downpipes to put a 16T on either way. And yes, the angle flange will flow better, because the opening is 3" as opposed to about 2 1/2", but if your exhaust is smaller than 3", it's not really gonna matter that much anyway.

You shouldnt need a tune with a 16T - it doesnt move that much more substantial an amount of air.

Default VOLVO 850 Turbocharger Housing Swap

I am thinking of swapping the straight flange turbo (15G) housing with an angled flange.

Is it as simple as loosening the V-Clamp or some form of calibration is required while installing the housing?

The compressor housing on the TD04 turbos is interchangeable, you can keep your existing exhaust housing and put a 13g, 15g, 16t, 18t or 19t in it.

Its clocked by a little pin that lines up with the compressor housing.

You do not need to change your exhaust to run any of these turbos. BUT, you will get noticable gains depending how fast you can get rid of the exhaust gases. With that in mind the optimal setup with a TD04 is the angled housing since it is larger than the straight or the conical. That combined with a supporting downpipe will net you the best gains.

Each turbo has progressively better output. You have two points to look at, one is air flow and the other is boost. Comparing the 13G over a 19T, both turbos producing say 10 pounds of boost the 19T would produce way more volumn of air in the system than the 13G. A 13G would be working really hard to reach 10psi opposed to a 19T having to work very lightly to get the same gains. Meaning, yes, if you drop a larger turbo in your system you will notice a change without engine management, potentially dangerous too.

To make all this work correctly and take advantage of the gains that a larger turbo can provide you do need engine management. It will actually protect your engine from you and provide you with more performance than you can get through OEM engine management.

Boxpin,

Thanks for the info.

I am contemplating two options.

Replace the straight flange with an angle flange housing combined with a 3inch downpiple and 2.5 inch cat back. My stock turbo is a 15G straight.

Replace the current 15G with a 16T angle flange and 3 inch downpiple.

In both these cases, a re-tune should not be required, correct? An IPD ECU flash cost close to $900.00/$1000.00. Which I would like to avoid.

You should be fine but you should consider a tune at some point to really enjoy that turbo. Doesnt have to be IPD.

IPD ECU flash is only for 18T/19Ts. I believe they do not have firmware upgrade package for 15G or 16T.

Which other company do you know is involved in the same type of service?

lol wut? Of course IPD has tunes for 15G/16T. What do you think the stage 1 tune is for? It's for a 15G.
