Default Fan switch not working in one postion

My 1995 850's blower motor needs to be replaced since it's making a lot of noise. I know the resistor should also be replaced at the same time. Does anybody know if a bad resistor has anything to do with the fan switch not working in the first speed postion? If it needs to be replaced, does anyone know the procedure for replacment?
