Default Filling Radiator with Coolant

Forgive me for asking such a silly question but...how the heck do I add coolant to the radiator on an 850? Every car I've ever seen has a radiator cap on the top for this purpose. The only thing I can figure is that your supposed to fill it through the overflow tank.

Thanks

That's what you do. It's not really an overflow tank though. It should be about 1/3 to 2/3 full at all times. Look at the Min and Max lines on the tank. With the car off fill it up to the max line, start the car, let it run for a while and see if you need to add more.

+1.

Add coolant slowly to avoid getting air/bubbles (which would slowly bleed into the tank later, though since the tank is located at the highest point of the system).

I usually fill up to FULL after draining, start the engine and wait until the level drops (the idiot light on the dash should turn on) and then add more. Let it sit overnight and add again if necessary.

I only add up to between MIN & MAX, rather than up to MAX as stated in the service manual, because my 850 was overflowing from the cap if filled to MAX.

The tank cap is like the radiator cap; not to be opened when hot.

How do I drain a radiator on a 1999 s70. I see a cockvalve, on the bottem with a barb fitting, do I just hook up some tubing and crack the plug a bit?

Due to the age of your rad, it is safer just take out the low rad hose to drain (be careful with the neck as well) .

to keep from making new post. same thing. i am doing thermostat and you fill the engines coolant through the tiny passage in thermostat housing VIA overflow/top off tank?

this seems as thought it will take forever to fill the entire system.

Feel free to start filling the system through the upper radiator hose when you have it off to change the thermostat and then use the tank to top off the system once it is all back together.
