Default '65 PV544 - Carb reservoir filling up and spilling fuel.

Hello everyone!

I purchased this Volvo a couple years ago and I've never really had a problem with it. Use it as a daily driver every so often. Just recently the carb reservoir has started filling up and spilling fuel. On to the exhaust I might add.

My first instinct was that there might be a clog so I took apart both reservoirs and cleaned out the sediment and made sure the lines connected to and between them were clean. Put that all back together and was still presented with the issue. Then I took the hose that connects to the bottom of the carb needles out and fuel flowed freely out of them as well. So no clog.

This first appeared about a month or two ago and then went away and I had no issues up until now where every time I start the vehicle this behavior starts about 10 seconds after the car is running. Of note, I replaced the in-line fuel filter a few months ago. I wouldn't think this would have anything to do with the issue. Maybe an increase in fuel pressure, I'm not sure.

I've attached two images of the dual carb setup and a close up of the offending reservoirs so you all know what I'm working with. I believe they are Weber carbs.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Default fuel issue

Have you checked your float valve or fuel pressure?

sounds like the float valve isn't working. and the volvo EFI fuel pump has *WAY* too much pressure for a carb, but maybe it was bypassed and its running on the in-tank transfer pump only, which just generates a couple PSI, I dunno.

re: the 85, thats LH2.2, your car came with LH 2.4. significant difference is, 2.2 works off a hall sensor in the distributor, while 2.4 uses a crank position sensor. 240's with LH2.2 used 'chrysler' ignition, with an ICU on the front right fender behind the headlight, while 2.4's used Bosch EZK with the ICU tucked in behind the glovebox.

phew, that picture you posted of the 85, looks like a vacuum advance distributor....

actually, I'm not sure there's any reason the Volvo Bosch EZ116K ICU that came with LH 2.4 wouldn't work. the crank sensor goes to the ICU first, it generates the timing for the ignition power module that fires the coil. it has inputs from the antiknock sensor, the engine temp sensor, the CTS, the idle switch at the throttle body (ok, you'll need to come up with a idle switch?)... it has a couple outputs that go to the ECU, you can ignore these since you ahve no ECU. there is an input *from* the ECU, I believe thats a 'load signal' that tells the ICU to retard the ignition under heavy load
