Nope. Put OEM pads on and the problem will be solved. I just bought a pair at the dealer today for $67 and will be putting them on the T5R I bought last weekend. I HATE squealing brakes!!!

Hi Kakins,

+1 for Jim. I would first inspect to see if it's the wear indicator. If it is, replace the pads & possibly rotors, unless it has more thickness than the spec. If the pads are ok, I would take the caliper off, pads off, spray brake cleaner and apply silicone or molybdenum-based grease (cv-joint grease) on all metal-to-metal contact areas EXCEPT the friction surfaces. I would never put non-OEM pads on Volvos, but Akebono ceramic seems a good alternative and they are more expensive than the OEMs.

If you don't have floor jack & jackstands, have it done at a shop.

I hope this helps.

I've used PBR pads (I forget which grade) for a long time on all 4 Volvos that have passed or are passing through the family without any issue. Plenty of people use Mintex pads as well.

I just replaced all brake pads/rotors on the car. It went very smoothly and quite quickly.

Are they fairly new or pretty well worn? I have NEVER had squealing from Volvo OEM pads unless they were almost worn out. I went through Wendy's drive thru the other day and I was embarassed by loud my brakes were sqealing. I have the new pads and they are going on tomorrow.

Hi Kakins,
Did you apply some silicone/moly-based grease? My rears used to squeal, until I applied cv-joint grease. After that, the squeal never came back. If you did apply grease, the cause is very difficult to find.

Info2x:
Thanks for the note, it was interesting. I usually avoid non-OEM parts, unless they are of better quality. I never had good luck with cheapo, but seems like some non-OEMs are all right. BTW, I thought PBR was one of the OEMs? (I used Textar for the fronts and Rouland Dan-Block for the rears)

Good day,

JPN

I have no clue if PBR is an OEM supplier.

generic, I was going to go with hawk but figured it was overkill. The car is stock and I rarely get on it.

I just got done putting OEM pads all around on the T5R and replaced the front rotors with OEM also. I've just never had any luck with off brand pads. The pads I took of had better than 80% left on them, but I could not stand the squealing so took them off and trashed them. I do use Brembo rotors, but in this case I could not wait to get them and the OEM ones didn't cost but about $10 eachmore. I was not planning on doing the rotors until I saw how rusty they looked and I just ran out real quick and got them at the dealer.

Really old thread and I don't know.

But I just put Akebono pads on my 97 R based on a recommendation from fcpgroton and they are squealing! I just did it last weekend. First time in 20+ years I tried something other than OEM on a Volvo and they squeal. I should not have listened to the sales guy at fcp and just went with OEM. If they keep squealing I will end up throwing away $100+ and replace them with OEM. Kind of ticks me off.

Someone mentioned that you should change them at 3mm, so that would be right around the corner for you.

Can't remember the minimum thickness of the rotors, so check them and replace if necessary.

When I did the brakes the other night I literally just removed the old pads and put in the new without doing any cleaning at all. And they squealed. Today I took everything back apart, cleaned everything up good, put that red brake squeal stop stuff on the back of all the pads and put both the full shims and the half shims on the back. So far I have heard no squealing whatsoever, but I have only driven down the street and back. But the squealing was pretty much just pulling out of the garage.
