Is anyone familiar with the design of the front shocks? I can see up and down play at the top mount and have an annoying thunk from both sides when going over bumps. It looks like some kind of elastomeric mount on the top and am guessing that it is pooched. Can I buy just the top mount section? I want to be armed with some info before I get deep into it.

Yes, the upper spring seat has probably gone bad. This common on these models. If you have a lot of miles on the struts, go ahead and replace them. You have to the strut assemblies out and apart to replace the seats anyways. The OEM Volvo ones are suppose to last the longest.

 

yea, the upper spring mounts/cup/bushing...whatever you want to call it, is out. Its a good time to change shocks and/or lower your car if you want to. But definately recommend changing out the shocks/struts too.
