Default Front Strut(s) Question

I was looking to replace my front left strut per my mech`s advice and was wondering what a good price to do it was. Also can I get away with only replacing one or is it typically both? I was thinking $300? Never done it before myself and never had it done on a car so was going to pick your guys brains.

Thanks for everything!

$300 for just one strut or both? if it is just for one strut you are prob getting ripped off. l changed all my suspension system for less than 500 dollars, thats including both front struts and rear shocks with mounts doing it myself. it is always a good idea to replace both front struts with new mounts if you can afford but if not just go with just two struts and you should be fine.you will end up saving alot of money doing it yourself.you can search online at FCPeuro.com or ipdusa.com. FCP has a whole set of suspension for a reasonable price.l would not recommend just replacing just one strut.

Oh, I was just guessing for a front strut job (Both) for around $300. How hard is it to do on your own? Im pretty savvy but lack tools.

ok it is fairly easy to do if you are handy. you can get both front struts for 200 dollars or even less if you make some good online research. you can search online on the tutorials on how to change the front struts on these cars. if you are willing to do it yourself l can post up a DIY for the front struts. the only hard thing might be compressing the springs to get the old struts out. but aside from that l think it is an easy job. where r you located? if you are in ny l can help you out

Most auto parts places rent spring compressors. You pay $50 or whatever for them when you take them and get 100% of your money back when you return them. All you need besides that is a basic socket set, in metric.

I have an 2005 S60T, which I love! My car shakes in the front at 65 MPH, 1 mechanic said I need to replace the struts another mechanic says I need to replace the shocks.....does anybody have any insight as to who is right? I'm not very mechanic savy, but do my research.....All comments appreciated....btw, new to the forum!

Gpizzle: I would suspect that the shaking was caused by something other than a strut.

And BTW, welcome to the forums!

are your tires balanced? do you feel the car shake through the steering wheel or all over the car?

I'd second the wheel balance or maybe a tire going bad as in a belt seperating or even a bent wheel if you hit a pothole right.
Easy enough to jack it up and spin each wheel to see what you might see.

There is also the chance you have a warped brake rotor. They can cause a shimmy in the steering wheel but you usually feel it worse when you apply the brakes.

Youtube of strut replacement, it's a 70 series but ours (your's) would be pretty much the same.
