Default Fuel Pump

Hi,

I have a 94 850 GLT Sedan that needs a new fuel pump. I have removed the old pump and I need help on replacing the pump.

This is what is in my gas tank today:

Can I buy this pump and re-use the housing and save myself some $:

I really don't think I need to spend about $400 on a new entire unit.Volvo 850 Fuel Pump Assembly- Volvo Parts

But, I'm unsure on the electrical connections on the Bosch pump. The pictures on the Bosch unit look like it will work but I'm not sure.

Can anybody that has replaced their fuel pump give me their 2cents?

Thank you.

I bought a performance pump and installed it in the housing! It was a little tricky but got it in! Sorry I have no pics of the install I was trying to get it out of my shop! But I used a Wahlbro 255lph universal in tank pump and it works fine!

I also replaced my fuel pump on my '96 850R. Just be VERY careful with the plastics on the housing. I didn't break mine, but I know for a fact that those plastics get very brittle. Good luck!

Yes, I bought just the pump and swapped it out in the housing. Like bsalmonson said...be careful.

If you purchase(d) BOSCH Part # 69693 it should be a direct replacement for the pump. It should have instructions inside the box on how to hook it up but usually the connections are pretty clear so you don't wire it backward.

Like it said on IPD site; need to take your old pump out of the housing and measure the OD. There are two different bosch pumps. And like the other guys said; you can indeed re-use the housing, just be careful.

See this thread; esp post #6

I finally got around to removing the actual fuel pump from the plastic housing. I was careful and did not break anything.

I double checked the IPD website to figure out what pump to order and the model number stamped on my Bosch pump does not match any of those listed on IPD's or Groton's website. The diameter of my pump is 42mm and it's model number is 0580453037. It is my understanding that there are two sizes of pumps, diameters of 38mm & 42mm, correct?

So what pump should I order from IPD? Product Search

Here are some pics.

The two pump sizes for the 850 are 38mm and 43mm, so I would go with the 43; this one..

Like I said in the other thread I referenced earlier; you will need a short section of fuel line (the old one will be a tad too short), make sure you observe correct polarity and make good electrical contact when you hook up new wire connectors too.

When you ask for hose make sure you ask for high pressure fuel injection hose. There is also a difference between the hose in the tank and hose outside the tank. Gates makes a submersible fuel line hose a lot of the shops use when fabricating dual fuel pump pickups for high performance applications.
Usually if you ask for fuel line the person is going to grab you lower pressure hose for a carbureted application. It will work ok at first but it doesn't have the strength to handle the fuel injection pumps pressure reliably.
Also make sure you use the clamps made for the higher pressure.

This is the interchange I found on your pump number:

0580453033 Bosch
0580453037 Bosch
3501615 Volvo
3501619 Volvo
9135418 Volvo
9135605 Volvo
0580314067 Bosch

I had some free time last night so I installed the new fuel pump last night & the car is back on the road. checked & no leaks

The only modification I had to make was to replace the OEM's pump housing's negative female blade connection with a larger one. The OEM pump and this new Bosch pump have different negative terminal blade sizes. It was no big deal & easy to do. I was able to re-use the fuel line; it was long enough

The most challenging part of the re-install was to get the gasket on the pump housing to sit inside the gas tank's nozzle correctly. I used some silicone multipurpose lubricant to help, but it took me awhile to get the pump properly seated. I wish Volvo made the fuel pump access opening a bit larger or my hand is just too big

You'll know if you got it right on your next full tank fill up. If you didnt you get a pool of gas on the ground.
