Fuel pump dying, right?

Default Fuel pump dying, right?

Yesterday, I heard a "moaning" from right rear. Thought at first it might be a wheel bearing. It was heard only above 40 mph.

Today, I got a constant "buzz" from that area and even some "bogging" or stuttering when driving.

I limped home and put it in the garage. Fully assuming it's the fuel pump taking a dump. (If so, Robert's replacement video makes it look easy with entire assembly).

Thanks for any confirmation. This is an 850 Turbo wagon that just turned 99k.

Steve

could be the pump, something in the pick up, the relay or the filter. Given you had half a tank, I wouldn't think something got in the pick up (usually that happens when somebody runs the tank dry). You may want to throw in a new relay first just as part of the deal if its original...

Fuel pressure gauge would help, if you can get your hand on one.

Mercifully easy to replace. The gas tank is so well designed compared to everything else on the road.

Update:

Well, this is a little embarrassing. I ordered a new pump, pulled the old one, and noticed the tank was basically empty.

I've long had a problem with the fuel gauge, tracking mileage per tank via the trip odometer. I guess on the last fill up, I didn't fill it all the way so the 160 (half of the 320 I usually get on a FULL tank) really means I only half-filled it. (Normally, I fill it to the top, but I was probably in a rush to get somewhere and half-filled it.)

So, the new pump is in and at least now, the fuel gauge is working!!

I STILL have a moaning at about 35-40 MPH but do not think it's related to the pump. I think it "may" have something to do with the roof rack cross members I recently installed. I'm going to remove them and see if the howling is related to air passing over them.

thanks for the suggestions.

Here's a photo (from last year) with the winter tires and wheel covers:

moaning at 30-40 mph could be a wheel bearing starting to give up... or it could be those snows ur running :-) - I have the factory removable roof rack - no rails (really nice - they have pins which fit into the top of the door frames) - I do get some noise with them but its more of a whistle than a moan. (usually have a bike or 2 or 3 up there when the rack's on...

I haven't put the snow tires on yet (photo is from last year). We've had a (thankfully) mild winter here in eastern PA. I'll be putting them on this weekend...eventually it WILL snow.

I'll check the wheel bearing. thx

What did you find on the bearing and do you drive with the back windows cracked a bit ??
I found my wagon makes a weird noise from wind at certain speeds but only when a back window is open some.

In preparation for the blizzard, I removed the new cross members I just installed on the roof rack. (my car is not garaged right now and cleaning snow off that big roof is easier without cross members)

Well, drove it yesterday and the sound is gone!! So, it has something to do with air moving through the cross members. I'll do some more driving to confirm, but I got over 40 mph yesterday and no noise.

This car loves the snow, btw. I've got General Altimax snow tires on all four. FWD. Fun. So much for "mild" winter as I mentioned above. I got 26" here near Bucks County PA

You might need to add something like a hood wind deflector. Like a piece of plastic angled in front of the leading cross bar ??
