Hi i got a 94 volvo 850 about a yr ago. Back a bout feb or so i started having some major problems and now really dont wanna drive it much but i need to get them fixed.

First one is when i put the car in reverse it shakes really bad when you give it gas, no lights or anything comes on though. Ive been told the transmission is goin out but i really dont know much about cars so i dont know.

Second my starter burnt out when and had it rebuilt but apperantly that wasnt the only problem still wont start when i turn it over with the key. I know the starter is good cuz we rigged it up to a toggle switch to be able to start it.

any help would be greatly apperciated

How are the motor mounts? Does the car actually turn over when you try to start it? If so it's not the starter.

 

the car doesnt turn over at all. I have already taken the starter off and had it rebuilt, but when i put it back on it still does the same thing. Ive been told by some of the auto shops around here that it could be the nuteral safety switch. Does that seem right. As far as the motor mounts i have no idea. I had someone look at the car when it first started doing it and they told me that its the transmission. But it doesnt seem right to me, now i really dont know that much about cars so i could be wrong,. It only does it in reverse if i hit the gas and the car doesnt even slip in any of the other gears.

 

I would take a look at the motor mounts. My car was shaking pretty bad before I had all of them replaced.

As for the start, if you are able to get it to start with using a push button starter connected directly to the start, then the starter is fine. I would look into getting a new ignition switch. They aren't that expensive,

 

is there a way to tell if the mounts are bad.
