Cool Help!

Hello, I'd appreciate the help if anyone knows anything about this. I am a women and my dads trying to help me fix this car for a boy that I work with. About a year ago I crashed my 1996 850 Turbo, and ended up just getting a new car. So the Volvo(which i really loved!!) has been sitting for a while. I gave it to my friend and I want to help him get it on the road. At first it didn't start at all and after getting a new battery now the lights go on, and the key unlocks the doors but it wont turn over at all. No crank or nothing coming from the engine. We tried to find the starter and after 20 minutes my dad(who has fixed starters in many cars) couldn't find this one. Granted he had no room to get under the car. We don't know what else to do. We will end up getting a mechanic but If anyone has any suggestions that would be awesome. This kid bought the things he needs to fix the exterior and I really hope he is not wasting his money!! So any suggestions help! Thanks so much.

Starter is under the intake manifold.

Have you checked the basics? Getting fuel? Spark?

well I didn't think it would be fuel just because it didn't try to start up. No sound was made when i turned the key over. Do we have to get under the car to see the starter? or can we do it from the hood?

You will probably have to remove the intake manifold to get to the starter, in all liklihood. The good news is that the intake manifold is easy to remove. You'll just have to replace the intake manifold gasket (under 10 bucks) when you reassemble.

I have replaced the starter without removing the intake manifold. It can be manouvered out.

Please dont take offense to this but if your dad cannot find the starter maybe you should have someone else work on the car. I am just saying, its pretty easy to spot and can be done from popping the hood and looking down between the radiator and block under the intake manifold, you can see it. Two bolts from the transmission side and a bracket on the back side. Its always a good practice to view pictures of the starter so you know where the mount points are. I am talking about looking it up on Autozone or ebay for a picture. Also, just searching Google for the starter will get you pictures of what it looks like in and out of the car.

Okay, I searched Google and found this for you:

Under the intake manifold about dead center and there is a plastic cover with what looks like a metal strap around it. This covers the electrical components. It will pull off with a medium tug straight towards the radiator. I had to pull the radiator fan off before removing the starter itself. Chances are that the ground wire, (gray & braided) that's part of the starter that's corroded and broken, (comes in from the left side of the starter). Easier to replace the starter than trying to fix it yourself.

So, if she has a new battery, there should be a nice (one) click sound when the key is turned correct? Even if the starter is dead, right?

BOBBYBEAR: I don't understand the statement "EASIER TO REPLACE THE STARTER THAN TRYING TO FIX IT YOURSELF."

I've know some people who've tried to replace the braided ground wire only to burn out another component or have messed up the rebuild of the starter. I was just reading between the lines and offering the easy fix with a gentle nudge.
