Help!! My 96 850 won't get in gear after I start the engine
When I turn the ignition on and step on the brakes car will get in gear and my blinkers and power mirrors work fine, but once I start the car it won't get in gear and blinkers and power mirrors stop working. I do have an aftermarket alarm system and wonder if it has anything to do with it? I did disconnect the power wire to the alarm but that didn't help. I also disabled the alarm from the remote and tried.. nothing.. Any ideas before I pull out the rest of my hair?? [sm=headbang.gif]lol..
Check all connetors under the centreconsole and look for any loose/broken wire.
Do you see the ABS/Track OFF light on the dash when this happens?
If yes, wiggle the key and see if you find any improvement - replace electrical portion of the ignition switch.
Also try to unplug the aftermarket alarm completely if possible.

You are %200 correct, if I turn the ignition key back slightly everything works. Thanks a million, you saved the last four strands of hair on my head.[sm=groupwave.gif]Thanks again..
Now I wonder if some WD40 will take care of the ignition switch?

+1 Tech.
This is a electrical problem and is quite straight forward and easy replacement if you have the required part and tools. If you dont have the part and want to try fixing your existing one, then you will still have to do the same labour of reaching that part (end of the ignition tumbler - opposite side of where the key goes into the ignition switch) and then removing it to give it a nice spray of WD40 and then drying it with air before throwing it back in.
Good luck!
I would use electrical contact cleaner in lieu of WD-40.
BTW, I remember that my ignition switch cylinder thing used to come off completely justby pulling it hard. I wonder if it was a part of Volvo technology?

Thanks guys, I'll try the contact cleaner tomorrow, if that doesn't work I'll probably just leave it alone until it becames a serious issue or until I find an inexpensive switch.
