Default Help please! I can't lock my car

Hi Volvo Fans!

This is my first post here, but I've been riding in Volvo's since my dad's '66 122s station wagon...enough nostaligia. On to business...

I have an '93 850 sedan from new. When I use the remote fob, all four door locks go down, and a fraction of a second later they pop back up. I tried locking using the key in both front doors and get the same result. I tried the second remote and same result. I sat in the car and tried locking the doors using the door lock buttons, but as soon as the four went down, they all popped back up. Any ideas? Thanx in advance.

I wonder if the "unlock" button on the remote is stuck down? You might want to take the batteries out of the remote and then try locking it with the key. If it stays locked, you know where the problem lies.

However, I'm a real newbie to Volvos and electrical systems confuse me regardless. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon.

Good luck.

Thanx for the reply, Dave.

I actually did try that!! I'm leaning towards (hoping it's just) a bad relay or something with the remote receiver. Can someone direct me to the relay?

Or, if I'm off base...I'm all ears.

The relay is under the dash above the brake pedal. Not sure which one. I'll try to figure it out and get back with you.

Thanx RSPI

I have the central locking system wiring diagram. I'm wondering if it's relay 2/47 "Relay, Deadlock Setting" or 4/19 "Remote control module, central lock/anti-theft alarm"? Any thoughts on testing for the culprit?

Had the same problem with my wagon. Turns out the rear hatch lock mechanism was half rusted in the unlock position - just as though I was pressing the unlock button in. After a dousing with Liquid Whench, problem gone! Simple fix!

I would probably pull door panels 1 at a time and either unplug or disconnect the latches to see if the problem stops.

Hey Guys,

Thanx for those two great ideas. Trunk lock is already a little suspect...

...I will try those two suggestions, but it occurred to me that I left a detail out of my original post. When I sat in the car and pushed down the door buttons, they popped back up, but if I held my hand on the button and stopped it from coming up, all the buttons stayed down. That makes me think that if one of the doors or trunk relays was stuck in the "open" circuit, then the buttons should keep trying to pop up. Just an assumption and I've been known to lend a lot of truth to what they say about that word. So, first I'll isolate each of the locks and see if that solves the issue.

Thanx again!
David
