Default Help with Scanning!

Hey guys,
I'm having a problem with my car (1997 GLE) where it suddenly starts to run like a bag and then shuts off.
I am hoping to scan the car and get the code, but need a program to do so. I have a laptop with a serial port and the appropriate cables, what do you guys recommend? Is there something I can download from the internet?
Thanks for your help!!!
My feet are sore from all the walking!

where are you? Can't you just get your hands on an OBD-II scanner and check for codes like that?

Hey,
I've tried two already- and they didn't work. I was told that normal obd 2 scan tools didn't work on Volvos. One was a cheap one and the other was a expensive matco scanner.
Was recommended to use a computer and get a program for it. Got the computer- just need the program!@

Thats BS I've used cheap obd reader and ones from like oreillys or napa, and they work just fine, whoever told you that was probably just lazy and didnt want to help. BUT they do work just fine. It annoys the crap out of me when someone says that just because its a volvo. you can check codes and clear them, but the only you cant do i believe is turn off the service light with the reader or at least the cheap readers

Do you have a CEL (check engine light)?

Hey,
thanks for the comments thus far.
I do have a check engine light on. This is the first time I have had it come on.
It's the sixth time it has stalled out. Funnily enough after I had it towed home, hours later it started and ran fine.... cars!
Not driving it though until I figure it out though, CAA has towed me far too many times recently!

Well, I have a cheap scanner that works fine for me. My car is a '95. Anywho, random stalls and no starts are symptoms of a bad fuel pump. Does it seem like it's running out of gas? It could also be the fuel pump relay.
