Default How to connect an iPod to 850 CD/Tape unit??

I have perused the forum looking for the relevent thread but can't seem to find it.

So here goes; I want to connect my iPod to my stock 1996 850 R CD/Tape deck unit.
There is a button for a CD Changer, but no chnger in car, so I'm thinking using this mode or input this is the way to go.
It doesnt have to be the iPod plug that goes in the base and charges and controls iPod, I would be happy using the headphone jack, but it would be nice if it was the former.

Any tips on how to?

I've owned the car for 3 days

This deals with tape deck head unit. Mine's CD on top. Different inside I expect.
Never dreamed it could be this complex :/

Why not adapt into the CD bus data connector? That looks like what the ebay adapter does.

@ Volvo850-R, that means you DID NOT read through the instructions. The very FIRST picture shows the head unit with the CD on top. Step 5 shows the cd player being removed.

I did that mod on head units with the cd on top, the SC-816 units. The thing about the adapter's like the one you found on eBay is that they are iPod specific. If you do the tape deck mod that I did, (mostly barrowed information from other head unit mods) is that you can plug any mp3 player into the jack.

The downside is that you have to control the music from the player, not the head unit.

This one is nice if the pin matches the old head units we have.

I have an MP3 cassette adaper, works like a charm in my SC815 radio.

They do sound good. The only reason to do the cassette mod IMO is to get a better wire connection in the event that the cassette adapter wire gets weak.

Default ipod adapter

I followed a link about a year ago that showed a beautiful little trick to jump an earphone cable directly into the cassette deck (not cassette / CD). You gut a cassette and route the cable anywhere you like, I put mine in the armrest. turn on ipod and push dummy cassette in and you are playing the ipod! It's quite easy...Might have to swap the CD deck for cassette

The SC-815, SC-816 has the CD/Cassette and the mod can be done on them just as easy. The good thing about these decks is that they are mostly Premium Sound Systems and have a stronger built-in amp and sound much better.
