how much to replace the clutch?
how much is the part (volvo OEM or a good aftermarket)?
how much should i expect to pay for this kinda work? Also, how long do the volvo oem clutches last?
Also, exactly how will i know if the clutch is gone? The car has 166k miles and to the best of my knowledge from the past owner's record that go back to the date of sale, he's never replaced it, but it still drives with np whatsoever

Well if it still drives with no problem, why do you want to replace it? If it hasn't been abused then there shouldn't be anything to worry about. As far as clutch kits go, they cost as much as you want spend. Is the car going to be stock? If so, go with Sach's clutch kit, they're about 200 from FCP, quite a few people run them including Tech.
If your going to pay someone to do this work, I would expect to pay a lot. You have to take off the wheel, support the engine, drop the subframe, pull the transmission, replace the clutch (and whenever a clutch is replaced your supposed to resurface the flywheel), and then put it all back together. I can picture a shop charging you a full days work for it.

I would not replace the clutch unless it is slipping or is making noises. Replacing a clutch is like replacing a RMS, the parts are not that bad, but the labor is killer. I would think that the whole job would run you around 1000 dollars to have it done at an independent shop. More if you take it to the dealer.

To be honest, my whole clutch kit, and cylinder are being replaced.. It's been about 10 days and I don't have my car... Weird. But the kit was 370 from Volvo dealership along with the cylinder which was 200. Labor is different everywhere honestly so you just have to go with your gut. I'm paying exaxctly $1000, from an independent foreign car shop. Good luck. S40 T5 AWD 6spd

to the question of how long do clutches last - it really depends on the driver and the usage. I had an Audi 4000Q go 300K miles on the original clutch and that included time living in San Francisco. If you don't use the clutch pedal as a foot rest and you don't do pure city driving or need to heavily slip the clutch to start off in 1st, there's no reason you can't get 200K+ miles. If you don't have any slippage, a real seal oil leak or don't hear noises (pilot bearing stuff) or shudders (warped plate), then enjoy the ride.
