Getting old. The motor has a bearing on both ends. Maybe one is worn more than the other.

Bearings will make a different noise depending on how much of a load they carry, the direction the load is placed on the bearing and also the direction the bearing is spinning.
It sounds a little odd but it's not uncommon for a bearing to quiet down when loaded in one direction compared to another. When you turn left the bearing must get pushed into a "good" position and it quiets down.
You should definitely take it apart and lube it or replace it before it starts to drag and possibly pulls too many amps through the resistor and burns out the blower motor resistor.
