I have 2 850's. The '95 has a ticking sound intermittently at idol which my Volvo dealer said was a normal emissions noise. At times it would double-time, ticking twice as fast as it would before, and they assured me this was normal. My '96 never ticks, nor have I inquired as to why this is...or isn't.

On the other hand, if you think it's a lifter ticking, chances are you may not be getting your 850's oil changed at the dealer, or with the proper oil filter. These cars require a special oil filter, one which has a CHECK VALVE inside it, which keeps oil at the top of the engine to reduce cold starting wear. Stop going to rinky-dink express-lube joints for oil changes that cost the same as the ones at the dealer, and provide inferior filters with essential parts missing. 6.2 quarts of synthetic blend oil along with a Volvo oil filter should eliminate that ticking noise, unless you have more severe problems.

A good place to start anyway. Good luck
6.2 qts?!?!?!? we only need 5.6 qts unless you have a turbo and drain the oil cooler which very new do.

The rinky-dink place I take it to uses the correct Mann filters and the oil I tell them to use, which they open in front of me.

The last time I went to the Volvo dealer I walked around the shop for a while and I saw how they were putting Motul mineral oil on a 2005 S40. I asked the guy at the counter what kind of oil they use for the oil changes and he said synthetic.

The rinky-dink place I go to has an elevator and they always inspect the car while they are waiting for the oil to drain from the pan. They also regularly ask you to start the engine to check for problems with the exhaust, which they do checking for noises and vibration under the car.

I´m not trying to say that it is better to take it to a quick-lube store instead of a Volvo dealer. I am saying that I prefer my lube place to the stealer.

Axel, you're really right about the Volvo dealership in Argentinabeing "rapership".

It always gives me a hilarious laugh whenever the term "rapership" comes to my mind.
