My quick answer is if you know the car's badging, generally T5s were the 2.3 HPTs and GLTs were the 2.4 LPT. If you know the VIN, the 6/7 position say which engine.
what year and model car or are the engines out of the car? you can check out the volvo modular engine wiki to see what engines were available in a given year.
you posted this in the 850 board and afaik, the 2.4T was never an option in an 850 but did appear as the LPT engine in the s/v70 GLTs.

If it's got a leather steering wheel, it's a 2.3, I think so anyway.
