Impossible Harmonic Balancer Removal
Hey Im trying to remove the harmonic balancer...
Is the center nut (30mm) reverse threaded? I have put over a hundred pounds of force on that sob, and broken tools trying to get it off. Whats the deal? Anybody have experience with that or have any tricks?
thanks, abe

At the shop I am working at one of the (old timers showed me a trick) use a breaker bar with the shortest extension possible and use the starter to break the bolt loose. Might sound strange and I didnt belive it until we did a timing belt job on a honda pilot that our 1100 foot lb impact gun wouldn't break loose.

so utterly dangerous. I have heard of people loosing there lives doing that, exactly that. please DO NOT EVER DO THAT.

use a little heat, being very careful not to melt things, or catch grease on fire. hand torch (bernzomatic) is preferred. get it hot, does not have to be red hot, but very hot and take the impact to it using the shortest extension possible.
I actually always use a short 30 MM impact (no extension) with my 900 ft-lb Snap-on gun, (BIG RED)
I run onto this problem from time to time heat always does the trick.

If you'd ever seen how fast that bar flies and how hard it can hit a wall if it slips you wouldn't have to ask that question. It's worse when it's the guy in the bay next to you and you didn't know it was coming !! He braced it against the frame in the wrong direction so it had a third of a turn to get some inertia.

Bottom line you need a more torque to get it off. Safest is a strong impact like 'Big Red' (love the name btw). What I use is a pretty strong impact as well. Oh, now that I think of it. I had an Ingersoll Rand that I was using before and it was a pretty good impact. But, it could not get that nut off, I had to use my 'Earthquake' impact to remove it.
