my interior tailgate parts are a mess. the repair kit and my own jerry-rig have not worked.

you should be able to find plenty of used interior tailgate parts - search for parts cars on Craigslist or nearby yards via car-parts.com Most 850s go to the yard due to things like blown heads etc or front end collisions...
