Default Leaking sunroof?

Hi,

My 850 is equiped with the factory sunroof, and in heavy rain I get an occasional leak through the interior lights, and sometimes just above the drivers seat. I have cleaned the sunroof opening and blown compressed air through the drain holes. There is a gap in the trim above the windshield on the drivers side. I am wondering if the sunroof on these cars is prone to leaking, or if I may need a new windshield. Any ideas?

Thanks

If it's leaking through the dome lights I'd be more inclined to think the water is coming in past the windshield IF it's while you are moving.

With the sunroof open you should try poring water into the channel to see if it's actually draining and draining at a fast enough pace to not back up.

Have you actually seen it dripping down from the sunroof and is it leaking sitting still and or moving ??

There is always the "Trailer Park" fix pictured below

It happens when I am moving. I was leaning towards the windshield myself since the car is dry and the drain channels aren't blocked. The trailer park fix is an idea, but I think I would go with Red Green and use the Handyman secret weapon first

If it's warm enough where you are to do it without it turning to ice I'd still try to pour water into the channel to actually see it draining and draining fairly well.

If it's happening when you're moving I'd be more inclined by your description to think it's the windshield. If the sunroof wasn't draining fast enough the water should be sloshing around in those channels and I'd think you see water falling down form around the headliners sunroof mounding. Just a guess.

You can pick up a tube of "flowable silicone" at most parts stores. It's made specifically for sealing glass. It would be quick and fairly cheap to cure or eliminate the windshield as the problem.

Sorry, forgot all about red green

These sunroofs leak about 50% of the time. Usually around the inner edge of the seal against the glass. If this is your problem, it can drip down on stuff, liky your head and on trim that gets wet. You can usually see it leaking/dripping in the corners of the glas while it's raining.

Anyone know if they still make the gasket for our sunroofs and who carries it if so

Mine doesn't leak water yet but has a mild wind noise so I know it's on it's way out. I was toying with the idea of wiping it lightly with brake fluid, letting it sit a bit and then rinsing it off. The brake fluid would slightly swell the rubber.

I think you can still get the seals from Volvo. From what I have read, it's real hard to get them on the glass properly.

If your sunroof is making noise, maybe it's not adjusted properly. Is it flat with the roofline?

There are times I just can't think outside the box. Now that you've mentioned "adjusting" I'm wondering if there is a stop that would be adjustable on how far forward it comes. If I get it to come a fraction further forward it might seal properly.

Thanks for the kick !!

Great links.

To adjust the sunroof, I usually drop the motor but leave it connected to it's power. Then I run the motor to it's stop. With the motor dropped, I slide the sunroof into it's proper place then put the motor in place. Put a screw or two in it and run it through to see if it's adjusted right.

OR . . . post number 4.

Shows a picture of the Permatex flowable silicone made specifically for sealing automotive applications and there is even a part number clearly showing in the lower right of the photo. Available at NAPA, Oreilly, autozone, pepboys .....

I went by the glass shop and it looks like my windshield has begun to delaminate and the installation was botched, so I am inclined to thing the leak is more windshield than sunroof. I am hoping to pick up rock chip, so for the next little while I am going to follow the logging trucks and see if they can help me out with a cheaper windshield!
