I just bought a 95 850 GLE wagon. It's kind of coldish here in NZ at the moment and the back lift gate drops often. I noticed there are no visible struts. What system does it use and is it easy to replace so it holds itself up? Cheers.

 

there are lift struts behind the plastic panels in the inside of the car in the roof. easy to replace. make sure u dont crack the plastic.

 

Thanks for that. Is there a good way to remove all the plastic so I don't break any of it. The plastic around the lift gate is currently held with tape so the previous owner clearly didn't have any luck removing that bit

 

just dont be in a rush and you should be good. i almost always crack it, but the less crack the better.
