Default lights out under gear selector

At night when I have the headlights on and the switch to full on the instrument panel lights, it appears there is a light out under the part where the first half of the spedometer is, and the right side of the temperature gauge, also, I don't know if there were ever lights there, but the letters on the gear selector are not illuminated, nor is the economy/sport/winter button.

I have a haynes repair manual for the car, but the dashboard and shifter removal instructions don't match the ones in the manual. (there aren't screws in the same places)

the car is a 1995 volvo 850 t, automatic.

The shifter light should work. You have to remove the Console to replace it.
You have to remove the speedo cluster to fix the bulb by the speedo.

That indicator light is a complicated part - mine had to be replaced as it wasn't figuring out when I put it in Sport mode, but if you haven't been messing with anything and it just stopped working, I would guess it is the switch that has all the indicators etc in it - called the PRNDL switch and it isn't real cheap, so get it to the dealer!

My econ/sport light works, but my gear selector bulb is out. How much do you estimate it would cost in labor to replace it?

I replaced ours really easy when it went out. Remove the center console enough to access the bulb and holder. The assembly from the dealer was almost $50! I took it to my local Radio Shack and found a proper bulb that fit the holder for about $4. Time involved was about 1.5 hours to take it apart and put it together again. If you are mildly handy with tools, it is an easy job.
