Default Manual trans advice needed please!

1994 850 N/A 150K

I've read countless posts on auto trans, but there seems to be little in the way of manual transmission advice or how-to's, so forgive me for creating an extra thread.

After replacing the drive axle and losing some oil, I'm wondering what my best bet is to get back up and running. According to both of my books, I need to use the "recommended" oil and fill to the bottom of the top plug on the transmission.

Three questions:

Is the Redline MTF on FCP Groton an acceptable substitute for the "recommended" $22/qt. Volvo 1161645?

Should I drain and refill, or just top off? I am not sure if the transmission has ever been drained, and I've read a lot about the "if it ain't broke, don't flush it" mentality.

What size is that plug? None of my sockets will fit, and I can't seem to find the info anywhere. Would just like to go and buy 1 tool, in one trip!!!

Thanks in advance as always.

I am new to the volvos so i cant give any fluid recomendations, however at 15 years old and 150k I would absolutely do a drain and fill. there is a lot of controversy with the power flushes on the trannys.I would never do a power flush on a tranny

The oil that goes in there is synthetic 5W30 motor oil.
Alot of people like the Mobil 1 5w30 oil.
I am running a 5w30 motor oil as well. I forget the brand though.
They say it takes 2.2 liters to refill it.

Thanks guys for the replies...

So 5w30, huh? Interesting. No wonder Volvo makes it so hard for you to figure that out.

I also am leaning towards the drain and refill (absolutely forget about the power flush!)....Tech, in your experience working on these cars, is this a fairly straightforward job, or are there any potential problems that I may run across? I always like to know the worst case scenario of what I'm up against.

Thanks!

It is not bad at all. There is 2 plugs one is the drain and the other is the fill.
