Default More power all the sudden...

Yesterday I jumped in the car and had an extra 40 horse power all the sudden. Instead of boosting 30% into the white I was boosting 80% into the white. Couldn't resist a few spirited moments but I took it easy.

Today a little of the same until I selected E on my performance selector. When I switched back to S to show my wife the new found power it was gone.

My educated guess is that I was over boosting a little. I checked for loose or broken vacuum tubes but found none. Maybe my waste gate was stuck???

Seen the Disney movie 'Turbo'?

The white section on the gauge is 10psi. 850 turbos should hit 9.6 at most (R's 10.5). Sounds like you were running as it should for that short time. How is the condition of the Wastegate actuator?

No, maybe I'll watch it tonight if it's on NetFlix.

I have no idea about the "wastegate actuator". So you are thinking that I've been running way low for a long time??? That would suck. I really know nothing about turbos other than how to check shaft play.

Actually I have driven several of these T5's with the boost gauge. I have seen none of them boost past 1/2 way into the white.

Actually, I have suspected that I have not been running full power. I have that ScanGauge and when I monitor the HP gauge, it has never registered more than about 170 HP. This morning I decided to switch to it to see what I was putting out and for the brief moment when I was on the highway shifting from 2nd to 3rd (automatic) the gauge peaked at about 258 HP right before the shift. Then I backed off because I was at the speed limit.

In this video, at time mark 1:22, my tack is about 5,400 RPM's and you can't even see my turbo boost gauge needle. I'll do a better video tomorrow.

My 850 T-5 boost to about 80% in the white section of the gauge if I keep the pedal to the floor.

Dang, I feel like I have been abused, misused, and robbed.

One of those, "the more I learn the more I realize how little I know" situations.

People send me private messages all the time about performance and mods and I always tell them, I have no idea. Lol

RSPI - Upon WOT, my factory boost gauge in my T-5R gets pegged to the far right side of the gauge.

I hope this helps.

The power doesn't seem terrible, little lacking but not too bad. I'd get a cheap boost gauge and see where it actually lies, there's a possibility that the dash gauge is inaccurate. I never trust any computer that is supposed to gauge the amount of power you're making through the OBD system. Doesn't seem much different than my car before I modded the holy crap out of it.

The gauge on my 97 854R hits a little higher than that. The only time it pegged to the right was because my boost controller wasn't working correctly (vacuum issue I believe) and it was way overboosting. When that happened, the computer would cut the fuel because it was going over limit.

Well, I'd like to get it right. So I need to learn how to test the wastegate and fix whatever is wrong so I don't get smacked down by a 245 which almost happened the other day.

That's about what my '96 R's gauge does too, goes about 80% or so into the white on full throttle. It doesn't peg it.

Ok then, now to start checking why I'm not boosting. Is the waste gate the likely problem or the boost solenoid?

Do I have to pull the turbo to check the wastegate?

And to your question, most likely (i.e. the first thing I would ck) is leaks in your intake hoses.

Ok, the BOOST is back. I switched from E to S and it made no difference. When I seen it hit the end of the white I backed off.

I'll start digging in soon.

Oh, I did get a P0422 before I noticed the overboosting.

Shouldn't you be able to get turbo boost readings from your Scangauge rspi?
I know the Ultragauges do. Got one on order now.
