My 850 Died Last Night
It has been leaking oil and I was taking it to the shop on Monday. When I started it yesterday morning I noticed a clicking sound that I had never heard before. Clicking sound and leaking oil so I checked the oil. It was down less than a quart so I put enough in to bring right to the middle of the dipstick mark. The noise pretty much went away after it ran for a little while, but I kept hearing it occasionally on the way to work (about 30 miles). Coming home last night I heard it again and it got a little worse. Then all of sudden it was really loud. I thought the underneath shroud came lose and was dragging on the ground, but the noise kept up after I stopped the car. I had it towed to the Volvo repair shop I normally use and the just called and said it is not worth fixing. It would be about $3,000 for a used engine. The car is in great shape, but I don't know what to do at this point.

They didn't really look at it other than to start it up and hear the noise and said it is probably not worth fixing. It's a 94 with 206,000 miles so they are probably just thinking the car is not worth what it would cost to fix. The noise is almost like a grinding and rapping sound. I mean it REALLY sounded bad, but it seemed to still be running ok. Once the noise go really bad though, I did not push it at all. Prior to the noise getting bad it was running fine.

RE: My 850 Died Last Night
My son who is 26 said it feels like we are losing a family member. I have said on this board before this is my favorite car out of all the ones I have owned. I am still considering whether or not to have a used engine put in it. They told me it would cost about $3000 to have it done. In their opinion it's not worth it. That would be with all new seals and a new timing belt. That's a lot of money, but could I get a car that good for that amount? But if I do that then I might start having problems with the transmission, the suspension, the exhaust etc etc. It has never had struts, or exhaust and I have never changed the transmission fluid. On my first Volvo I put almost $3000 into it and ended up getting $1000 for it when I traded it in less than six months later because the diesel just would not run right when I moved to Colorado. I have time to think about it because I keep an old Honda Accord around for when my Volvo's are in the shop or somebody in the family needs to borrow a car for some reason.

RE: My 850 Died Last Night
I have the Volvo CD Changer in the glove box that I told them I was going to remove. Other than that it is stock. I might even see if I can take the factory head unit since it just pulls out. It has a really good sounding factory system.
Another question I have: I keep hearing how good the stereo is in the C70. Do any other models have this same stereo?
Thanks for the info on the S70. What about the older 850 T5's and T5R's? They seem to want more for them than the S70 T5's.

The 850 T5 and T5R are great cars as well.
I just like the 98S 70 my self.If you can find a good 850 then go for it.
Some of the special edition S70's had the C70 headunit which is the 3 disc C/D unit. The cars were not marked any different. The are very few.
$800.00 doesn't sound all that bad. That is $800.00 towards the new car.

Yep that's $800 toward the new car and I don't have to hassle with anything. I was thinking about parting it out myself, but I started thinking what my wife would say when I said:
"Hey honey some guy named Bubba is coming by this afternoon to take front fenders off the Volvo. Call me at work when he gets there".
Fill in her response right here.
Thanks again Tech.

In 95 it was a T5R. They only came in black and yellow for that year. I think it has 240HP vs. the 222+/- on the regular Turbo model. What is the 850R vs. the T5R? I thought the R was in 97, but I might be wrong. I made him an offer and he accepted it, but it's 300 miles away. Not sure what I am going to do yet.

RE: My 850 Died Last Night
The type R started in 94 or 95 and came with real nice grey 17" ltd wheels. They also had different turbo and suspension as well as the steering rack. The interior has suede and leather two tone seats. They are getting pretty rare and are very nice. I built a clone by upgrading wheels, exhaust and computer. If you are thinking of spending only $3k on another 850, I would reccomend keeping the car for your own parts car.

RE: My 850 Died Last Night
I'm really thinking of that 95 Yellow T5R for $7,000. That seems high, but I got him down $1,000. I can get a newer S70 T5 for less money with less miles, but I have always liked that yellow T5R, and if I don't get one now I never will. The T5R has 118,000 on it and the S70 T5 has 107,000, but it's on e-bay and the bidding ends tonight. The other one is a dealership I found in Chicago.

RE: My 850 Died Last Night
I personally would go with the R. They are real nice and I haven't heard of any real with those cars. I think the 850 is the best looking volvo ever made. I love the lines. That yellow is pretty cool looking too, unfortunately it seems to have lost the factory R wheels which were my favorite part when they first came out. Aparently people trade those wheels in b/c they are proned to bend which I think is absurd, but what do I know.I pissed a guy off on here selling a type R wagon that didn't have the original wheels or bumper and had painted the factory's grey to look like the R's, but I was trying to make sure that it was real and that some of the less experienced guys weren't going to get taken. I have seen plenty of malibus claiming they were ss chevelles until you ran the vin. $7000 sounds pretty good though and that is pretty decent mileage. Good luck, let us know what you went with
