My 850 needs the turbo replaced
Ok so I brought my car into the shop today to find out I need a new dimmer, and a new turbo (the current one is leaking oil) the mechanic said that it would cost me 1500 with out labor for the turbo.
I was thinking, if i need the turbo replaced, could I just buy a better turbo and have that one installed? Would this work? Someone told me that installing a turbo on a regular N/A engine messes up the transmission. But since my car is already a turbo would the transmission be able to handle a better turbo?
Also is 1500 too much for the turbo to be replaced?

Do you still have good boost?
If so then I will be the turbo is good.
Were they just wanting to replace it because it is leaking oil?
If so how bad is your oil leak?

Yeah, it works fine, I had no idea there were any problems with the turbo. They just want to replace it because its leaking oil.
It leaks a little bit, not too much, I have not had to put more oil in and its been leaking for about 2 months now.

You may have a different seal leaking. If the turbo is still working fine I would leave it alone.
There is an oil return line that goes from the turbo to the engine block. The seal at the block is known to go bad. That might be leaking.
I would clean it up good and take it for a drive and see what it looks like.

Use brake cleaner and clean everything on the back side of the motor including all the oil.
If you change the seal your self it will cost like $10.00 for you to do the repair.
