i Found a 95 or 96 manual wagon in a local yard, ive been thinking about doing the manual swap on my 95 turbo wagon. is it worth the work? Also what about the console?

 

Tech: yeah I got the shifter, cables, base for the shifter, master and slave cylinders, pedals, and flywheel. Good to know about the starter.

 

If it's a 96, the transmission isn't going to have a speed sensor on the back of it which means you'll need to tap into your ABS for the speedometer.

 

Shelby It is well worth it IMO!!!! You can use the Auto console as well.


ibified Cool you got everything you will need. I would buy a R clutch to hold up to the power better.

 

Tech: thanks for all the help. I live about 5 minutes from South Bend Clutch....I imagine they can come up with something for me that will hold some power. =)

Hey Tech, Working on my swap now. Trans is off my donor car a 1993 850 GLT (M65L 3.77 final drive), being installed on my '97 854R. I got just a few questions for you.

You completely remove the TCU once the swap os done?
Would doing this not through a CEL?

The R has a VSS that plugs into the top of the auto trans, the M56 does not have a VSS. Any idea how I should Handle this so I'm not getting a CEL and the flashing up shift light?

Spent the last few days doing my swap and we're getting right down to the end. All we have left to install today is the drive shafts, clutch master, And plug in the reverse wires.

 

Yes I removed the tranny ECU all together. But you will have to either jump the wires for the PNP park and neutral setup. Or do like I did plug the old PNP into the portion of the plug that is left and leave it in the park position.

As for the speed sensor not to sure. I have not messed with this as of yet. Mine was out of a 94 and going into a 95. That was a direct swap.

Not sure if you can just extend the harness from the car and use the sensor on the tranny in the back. There will be no more flashing arrow. If the setup will not work(wiring) then the ABS light will be on and the speedo might not work.

You will also most likely get a Cel for the Auto tranny missing. It might not actually throw the Cel on but the code will be there.

 

Man you're quick! Thanks. I'll pull the TCU. Already have the wiring jumped, and the polarity reversed for the sensor on the fly wheel. So that should be all good there.

I thought the '96+ already got the speedometer readings from the ABS? If that's the case my speedo should still work just fine.
Now I'm assuming this cause my speedo worked just fine when I pulled the VSS on top of the trans and drove about 5 miles to work before I remembers that I forgot to put it back in... Only thing different about the car was the shift points. 1st gear would hold way too long...

Got the car all put back together except for the Parts guy delivered the Automatic drive shaft seals instead of the manual ones that we ordered, so were all done minus the axles being installed.
Started the car right up and ran it for a minuet to make sure it was all put back together properly. No CEL's as of yet, but we'll see what happens when we take it out on the road for the first time.....

 

Got it almost all done. The parts guys delivered the auto axle seals instead of the manual ones. Other then that, we have it all done. Fired up the car and no codes just sitting there. We'll get the axle seals in on Monday and install the axles and be done with the job.

 

Sounds like all is going well. Hopefully the last bit will go fast and you will be cruising around enjoying the car!

 

My goodness it really does feel completely different!!!

last little bit took about 45 minuets then we took it out for a drive. Feels great! I did get a CEL about 20 minuets after the initial drive. I tried pulling the codes but my scan tool says there are no codes stored. When I try to clear it, it blips out for a half second then comes right back up. I figure it might have something to do with the TCU being pulled. Not too worried about.
