I am 17 and i just got a 1995 Volvo 850. But I i took it to get a tune up and i was told my transmission range sensor has a circuit malfunction. Do i need to get a new or rebuit tranny? Or do i just replace the sensor? The code is P0705.

Probably just the sensor. Tech is our resident repair guru. He can probably give you a better answer. Is the transmission shifting OK?

Most likely you only need a new PNP sensor or micro switch. With a service manual, tools & a common sense for safety, you can do it yourself.

Yeah its shifting ok when the senor works but when it malfunctions it wont get out of the last gear. Its a non turbo 850.

 

What do you mean by the last gear, the 4th gear (top gear/overdrive)? If so the torque converter lockup solenoid may need replacement.

P0705 is "Gear Position Sensor Signal Incorrect". See attached for troubleshooting. Also hear Moderator Tech's suggestions.

My mistake 4th gear is what i meant.

 

Yes sounds like a bad PNP switch.
