Need Some help, test drove a volvo 93' 850GLT
Hey guys, I need your opinions on whether to go on this deal or not? I can get a volvo 850 93' for 900$, it has 250K, and has all previous records of maintance done on it. The owners were nice guys as well, told me infomation before I asked for it.
some problems with it, are
Theres a loud screeching sound, kind of clicking maybe in the engine bay..the closest I can say would be by the belts/pulley would that be correct?
Another thing is that, when I want to shft to D from P, I have to press the OD circle button in the right top corner of the center console...is this normal?
Haha, also is steering on the 850 supposed to be so tight? I'm coming from the BMW E36 world..so haha not so sure about the transition :P

When you spend $900 on a car these days, you can not be expecting it to be much. I sold my 850 for $800 with a blown engine three years ago.
Might be okay of a deal if you know how to work on it, or at least really want to learn. Otherwise, unless you've got cash to burn at a mechanic, spend your hard-earned money on something a little less needy. Good luck!
I would assume the noise is from the serpentine accessory drive belt as you guessed it, or the bearing on one of the pulleys may have retired. I would also check the pulleys in the timing belt area.
The timing belt replacement interval for '93 is every 50,000 miles or 5 years.
I would assume you'll have to spend approx $1,000+ for parts alone to make the car in good running condition. If you can work on it by yourself, it would drastically reduce the cost of maintenance.

And no, you do not need press any button other than the one on the shifter to get it shift. The micro switch may have failed, which is a DIY easy fix.
