New guy here! What is this part?
Hey new owner of a 96 Volvo 850 Turbo. I bought it and noticed the owner put tape around this hose. Looks like it goes from radiator to a box? I don't know what it's called to buy and replace? Any Help?

Edit is this it? Also is it important to replace?

Here's a fun topic for discussion.
Do you guys suppose that air hose is the inlet to the ECU box, or the outlet? It appears to me that it's actually the outlet. I marvel that they routed it the way they did, but I do see some sense in it.
discuss amongs yourselves, ha ha.
P.S. was working on an XC90 T6 a while back (don't ever do that) and that sucker had a computer cooling fan in the line coming from the cowl. Even more interesting.

Thanks I ordered it! Unfortunately I decided to take a deeper look at the car today and what I found was the previous owner removed the dash and removed the Service Light Bulb. And when I started it today it had a misfire.
I got ripped off pretty much. How my mechanic did not notice anything surprised me..
Plus I saw a bit of white crud on the top of the dipstick. So I assume it's a bent valve or bad head gasket aka basically needs a new engine rebuild.
Also the wipers aren't able to turn off. They just keep running and running.
Wasted $1600 but I love Volvo's. Time for a project car! I don't care if this car would cost me thousands of dollars I just love it. Planning on registering it Monday and going to AUtozone to scan what the Check Engine Light Means.
I hate people who do this kind of stuff. People aren't honest anymore. Sigh

May be a head gasket blown but do a compression test first.
Short trip running produces a lot of condensation in an engine which can often shows up as a creamy film on the dipstick. A good highway run regularly at higher speeds for 30-40 minutes or more gets the motor running hot and can disperse any condensation.
Watch your temperature gauge however and stop immediately if it goes into the red.
(Don't try and limp home if overheating occurs)
Make sure your overflow tank is properly topped up prior also and the cap seal is sound.

If you drove the car and it DID NOT have a misfire when you purchased it, and now does, it may NOT have had an issue before.
As explained, these cars have motors that do sweat when driven on short trips. That can make crud built up on the dip stick and oil filler cap. A good run down the freeway can clear that all up.
As for a misfire, you may just need a plug. Check it out and see. I do recommend people do a GOOD compression test before they start dumping money into it. Don't throw money into a car that needs a motor.
Oh, don't let that temp needle get anywhere near the RED. It will blow the head gasket. These cars have soft heads and letting them get hot just once will blow it. Don't even let it get close to that.
Anyway, there are some videos that should help you.

Most claim it is an exhaust, however on the '93 models, it has a tiny air filter in line right at the radiator. Seen one today.
