Default new heater core now temp gauge is maxxed out!!

I installed a new heater core today.took me 1 hour and 2 minutes with a little help from Mrs. Wayne. I used the link from Volvospeed and it made it a snap. (link is below) we lost about 1.5 to 2 quarts of coolant during the procedure. all the coolant came out of the expansion tank. went for a quick spin and the engine got up to temp, then kept going. it maxxed out and I never got any heat out of the vents. is this due to the low coolant in the system? my VW Vanagon temp gauge goes to the max if there is not enough coolant for the sensor to read. same issue with Volvo? the guy that replaced the radiator said he will top it for me for free.it's a 15 mile drive.is it o.k. to drive it that far with the temp gauge maxxed out?

You probably have air trapped and it needs bled out. This happens to me every now and then when working on cooling systems.

NO!

Deal with the air lock first or a new head gasket is in your future. I just let mine idle and then shut it down. Let it cool down and add more coolant and repeat until the coolant level stabilizes.

Never drive a car that is telling you its over heating. Bigger problems lie ahead if you do!!

Thumbs up

topped it up today. seems fine now. took almost a whole gallon. it seemed like a lot come out when I unhooked the lines off the heater core! luckily the majority of it went on the drivers side, where I already had the carpet and insulation out. I'm going to wait a few more days before I put the carpet back in to make sure it's not leaking.wheel bearings next.
