Default newb looking at buying an 850

hello, i am new to the volvo forum, but not new to cars in general. i've never owned a volvo before but they fit what i need right now. dad wanting a fun DD.

http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cto/1668501326.html

that is the car i am looking at right now. basically i just have a few questions.

1. what are the common problems with this car?

2. timing belt, when does it need to be replaced and how hard of a job is it? (i'm mechanical, done over 12 focus timing belts, and a passat timing belt)

3. how hard are these cars to repair?

4. what makes the 850 so special? i have been looking at s40s and s70/v70s and i feel that they are mostly uninspired and boring, but for some reason the 850 tickles my fancy.

5. how long can one expect this car to last?

Please read through some of the pages and check out the stickies. There are tons of these threads with your same question. Page 2 for example.

1. PCV

2. every 70k, not bad

3. depends on your definition of hard

4. depends what s40. Any gen1 s40 is ugly. 98 x70s are good, 99-00 are just as fine, little more computerized though. 850s are simple and easy to work on and parts are cheap.

5. how long do you want to stick money into it? Mine has 215k and 300k.

If you're doing anything performance related, do not buy an NA.

Yea it's like something people couldn't know until 15 years after they came out, 'these cars were built with great care and they last'. It's just a great car. Good hunting.

Go with an 850 or a 98 S/V70. The 99 and newer can be a head ache.

As for working on them, I have do a lot of work on 850s and it is not really hard. Just like any other car. But, it really all depends on what you call hard.

As for the 850 in the link, it sounds good as long as he has all the records to back it up.
